I have read just about all of Dr. Fuhrman’s books, and this one is the most powerful yet because it is so extremely focused! This book is well-written and complete. All you need to reclaim your health from diabetes can be found in this very readable book. While it may not be perfect, it is close to that in my opinion as it gives those with diabetes enough information so they may take back responsibility for their own health.It needed to be written because diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in this country due to our strong and growing preference for fast, nutrition-less food and lots of confusing dietary advice. People in the USA are getting Type II diabetes at younger ages, and baby boomers are now awakening to this sad fact. I don’t have it, but I was showing signs in my early 60’s of being insulin-resistant. Diabetes runs in my family, so I am quickly phasing into the highest level of a Nutritarian Diet to secure my future health.Our food preferences change when we choose to eat well, and this diet is VERY satisfying and becoming more and more delicious to me over time. Nothing on earth compares to feeling great and being healthy and strong, as I am now! Thank God, most of us boomers are too wise to passively accept current conventional medical advice that would have all of us trying to “manage” diabetes when MOST of us can CURE it. This disease is a monster that cannot be controlled without paying a very high cost – like robbing us of 6 quality years at the end of our life plus all the various bad medication side effects that make us more and more miserable as we age.This book is very powerful because it includes very specific information for both patients AND doctors, since a doctor who understands nutritional therapy is essential to healing from diabetes. Dr. Fuhrman’s nutritional prescription is as powerful – if not more so, because of all the GOOD side effects – than any medication a doctor could ever possibly prescribe. As a result, he provides medical advice for the benefit of both doctors and patients in Chapter 10. They must work together as a team to effectively and safely attack this disease.In Chapter 10, one of the things you will learn is what medications are best to use and which should be avoided – and why – as well as how to taper off them. Patients need to know this because, ultimately, our health is OUR responsibility. We (and our loved ones) are the ones that suffer most if we continue to take this disease lightly. I cannot recommend this book more highly if you have diabetes, are pre-diabetic, or have a loved one with the disease.

When I read the recipes in the back of the book I thought they were so radical that no one, unless they were, ‘on death’s doorstep’, would eat that way. Well, I don’t see ‘crow’ as one of the options but, if it were, I’d be eating it. I was diagnosed with diabetes two years ago and since then, my life has been a rollercoaster between feeling awful and just fair. Although I’d incorporated more exercise into my lifestyle and my blood sugar had gone down, it didn’t change my overall feelings of well being. Seemed no matter what combination of foods I ate, I couldn’t seem to sustain ‘feeling good’.I decided I’d try one or two of the less ‘outrageous’ recipes and go from there. That was just about a month ago and I’m still trying the recipes. One day about two weeks into eating this way, I had a hamburger and french fries. I’m not kidding, I felt so awful the next day I could barely function.I have a freezer full of meat that I’m boxing up to take to the food bank. I gave a gallon of 1% milk away a few days ago. I’m also taking all noodles, pasta, etc.I’m also eating steel cut oats and taking red rice yeast. My cholesterol was down almost 50% my last blood test.So, like me, you can delude yourself into thinking you could never incorporate a diet like this into your lifestyle OR, you can try it and, like me, be amazed at how great it tastes, how fantastic it makes you feel and, wonder of wonders, you can eat as much as you want……and STILL lose weight!I’m grateful to Dr. Fuhrman for all the research and work he’s done to produce the book and the recipes. I truly think it’s a life saver. I understand that his other book, ‘Eat to Live’, also has some great recipes.I see on his website you can sign up, for a nominal sum, and get additional recipes and recommendations, etc., personally, I think that’s, ‘milking’, it but, that’s just my opinion. The more you become accustomed to fixing food this way, the more adventurous you’ll become working with the recipes.Good health!As an addendum to this review, it is now May 10 and I began eating as suggested by this book on January 21. When I began this way of eating, my blood sugar was 7.8 and my doctor wanted to start me on insulin…which I was VERY opposed to. I had my quarterly blood test on May 6th and my blood sugar is 6! NORMAL. I can think of no better recommendation for eating as recommended in this book. AND, although I stick to it about 99% I do use olive oil when I want to, I eat grilled shrimp on a caesar salad smothered in grated cheese occasionally. I love salsa and chips and have them once or twice a week so, it doesn’t have to be so radical you won’t stick with it. Tailor it to your life style and see what works and doesn’t work for you. No one will stick to any diet that is so rigid they can’t live normally.Good health!

This is one awesome book! Extremely informative. My husband was diagnosed with diabetis. He didn’t want to be on pills because of side effects and eventually you need more and more pills. I started cooking the way the book says and his blood sugar is normal and blood pressure is normal. He has much more energy. I feel better on this program too. Anyone who has tried this eating lifestyle and says it doesn’t work has not done it properly. EVERYONE should be eating this way as this is the diet that the God of the bible gave to us in the book of Genesis. If you have other health conditions besides diabetis that probably will go away too. The masses have been mind controlled into thinking if we get sick we need pills, surgery, chemo and it goes on….the powers that be get us sick by the horrible processed and addictive food on the shelves. Eat as nature intended. Vegetables, fruit , nuts, whole grains and seeds in their natural form. Add some clean meat such chicken, wild fish, and grass fed beef if you can. Unclean meat such as pork and shellfish should be avoided. The more animal protein in the way of meat, milk, cheese, and eggs you eat, the sicker you will be. Try this diet. It’s very good and you won’t be sorry

Before I start I want you to know that I am diabetic thus it was most important for me to learn how to get rid of it permanently. After failing several times I have finally started to stick to whole food plant based diet and enjoying it. This particular book is so awesome, so hugely empowering I started to read and couldn’t put it down. While reading i wanted to get and start doing all that Joei was saying. I am hummungously thankful to Joel Furhman, immensely grateful I wonder why I didn’t buy it earlier. I very very strongly recommend ….. please please please buy this book for your health. Its not just for diabetics but for heart problems, Blood pressure, arthritis any ailment you name it you fill find the secret of health in this very book.I know Dr Joel Furhman has written few other books and on recipes too which I am going to order too. At the moment I am taking all his recipes from youtube by Jill Dalton. Initially when she gave demo of the recipes, I would wonder and say “REALLY” is it possible to that they taste good. But when I made the first one i.e. zuccini lasagne, I was over the moon ….it was so tasty so tasty as if never before I have tasted such delicious food in my life. My husband loved it. Imagine no pasta lasagne recipe. She is awesome awesome .Well I can go on praising Joel Furhman, this is the best book ever.
