A very important beginners book – do not overlook this!
I’ve been looking for many years to get an introduction into electronics. Most of them want to jump into Arduinos & programming, which isn’t what I’m looking for right now. Also for what it’s worth I am a grown man with a high degree science background just nothing in electronics and I wanted a crash course introduction into the basics. This is it.Although it appears to be written for children, adults will get a lot of knowledge out of this. Do not underestimate it.Once you have completed this book, go onto the next book which is called Make: Electronics by the same author. Go through the cost & trouble to get the component kits and follow along hands-on. You will not regret it and you will get the knowledge you need by a highly skilled but easy to understand instructor.

Platt is the New Forrest Mims
I love the small landscape comic book format Make is experimenting with in its “Handbook” series.I also really like that this book includes a QR code that takes you to a one-stop shop for buying all the parts you need to work through it, as well as a traditional printed parts list. This is the right philosophy for interfacing online and traditional printed content: The book is a complete durable resource in and of itself, but has online support for the sake of convenience. In ten years, the links may be dead, but the links are not essential to understand and use the book–they just make it a bit easier to get what you need.Likewise, designing a tool-free introductory electronics curriculum is a great idea that’s very well executed here. You don’t need high-priced branded kits with patented connectors to learn this stuff. Alligator clips and old-fashioned through-hole components will get you there just as well, for a heckuva lot less, without lining the pockets of a bunch of middlemen. Finally, I want to call out Charles Platt’s talents as an author and illustrator. He has a great gift for clear, precise, memorable prose, and also for juxtaposing words and images on a page. As I understand, this book was both written and illustrated by the man himself. He’s a treasure.

Fun Electronics For Dummies!
This book and the accompanying kit sold separately or together was really fun for me. I have always been curious about how electricity works but never had time to learn. This book starts with the real basics and showed me how electrons flow. The experiments build on each other and nicely illustrate the function of resistors and the difference between parallel and serial circuits. There is even an experiment that shows how much more electricity is needed to illuminate an incandescent bulb versus an LED bulb which I found fascinating. I would highly recommend buying the accompanying box of components because it would really be a hassle trying to find all these different parts for each experiment. I highly recommend this for anyone who is ignorant about electricity but wants to learn! I even found it quite useful when I was troubleshooting my landscape lighting at home.

Fantastic Introduction to Low Voltage DC “Breadboard” Electronics Projects
This book is a level 2 introduction to low voltage DC (small battery powered) electrictronics and the amazing experiments and projects one can make. If you are looking for an even more introductory book check out “MAKE: Electricity for Young Makers,” by Marc De Vinck & Mike Gray that is a comic book of electricity safety and experiments with batteries and magnets (elementary school level reading). This introductory book jumps straight into low voltage direct current (DC) breadboarding experiments, using LEDs, resistors, capacitors, transistors, phototransistors, timer chips, switches, microcontrollers, and more. The project experiments go deeper as the book progresses and build up knowledge to the final project (elementary/middle school level reading). There are a few materials required to use this book including the electrical components listed above, plus a breadboard, breadboard power supply (or batteries), jumper wires for breadboards, and the basic and popular 7555 timer chip. After the projects are completed in this book, you’re ready for the next book of experimental projects called “Make: Electronics 2nd Edition,” by Charles Pratt (high school & college level reading).Ready, set, go: Make things!

Awesome book for beginners
Needed something new for my 13 year old son to do this summer so bought this book and the kit. My son is still working through the experiments but so far so good. The book is clearly written, easy to understand, and follow along. The illustrations are really clear and super helpful. I have my son read and then do an experiment while I’m at work, then show me how it works when I get home and explain why. Once he’s done with this book and kit, well get the author’s next book which is more advanced. Definitely recommend.

You might want tweezers
You working with very small breadboard, so you may want to have tweezers handy. What a great kit from one of the best teachers, who points the way to further experiments in this graphic book. Recommend to everyone
