This is a fantastic book! Ji Sun Lee and Jaymes Dec thoughtfully designed to book so children and adults who might be new to electronics can follow the directions and also learn the basics of the circuitry involved. With vivid photos and detailed sketches, the book supports learners who need to have visuals to understand directions. Even if you are an expert with electronic projects, you will most likely learn something new with this book. Have fun!

For Kids, Crafters, Artists, and Teachers
We’re increasingly seeing STEAM (science, tech, engineering, art, math) alongside STEM in education, and this book is a great example of STEAM skill building. Using conductive thread and simple electronics, kids can make projects with paper and cloth. That means lower cost, fewer safety issues, and an appeal to crafty kids as well as the builders in the group. There are ten chapters, and ten basic projects plus lots of extra inspiration. The first chapter shows basic sewing skills and doesn’t contain a project, but there is an appendix that adds that tenth project. Each chapter includes three sections: Learn, Make, and Explore. Each chapter starts with a Learn section that explains basic facts about electricity and electronics. Kids get to learn basics about conductors and insulators, for example, or transistors and light sensors. Early chapters teach the symbols of electric circuit diagrams, something a lot of electronics books for kids skip. Kids will also learn the terminology they need to communicate with others about their projects. This means that kids can keep records and discuss their projects, a great foundation for continued learning. The Make section starts with “Use Your Imagination,” which lays out the basis of the project (a vibrating motor, for example, or a switch that turns lights on and off) and encourages kids to think of a project they’d like to make. “Plan It Out” comes next, leading kids to go from their idea to a circuit diagram. “Preparation” includes a list of supplies and tips for success. Supplies include items like conductive thread, coin cell batteries, LEDs, and other sewing tools and electronic items. Most of them are available at Amazon. The Make section continues with patterns and step by step instructions for making a specific project. It might be a toy, a headband, or a pillow. All the projects are accessible for kids, at home or in a classroom. The Explore sections shows many more ideas, showing projects made by adults and by kids. The authors share some of their own experiences here, and everything from art installations to school projects are shown for inspiration. The projects build on one another, and the authors encourage practice and give readers goals to shoot for as they improve. This would be a great book for a classroom, home school, or scout learning unit. But crafters, including adult crafters, may like to use this book, too. If you want cute light-up Halloween costumes or Christmas tree ornaments, this book will give you all the skills and knowledge you need to accomplish those projects. Making your own electronic games and art projects moves into the realm of the possible with this book, too.

Great Tech Project Book for Crafty But Not Tech Savvy Families – Very Informative and Easy to Follow
Make: Tech DIY is a book primarily based on sewing and simple circuit projects. As per the book description, “she came up with the idea for Tech DIY, a series of sewing circuit projects that are meant to attract and teach technology to girls and their mothers”. This book can be applied all audiences, and the projects can be modified to fit to many projects outside of sewing projects. When it comes down to it, this book is a suitable book to utilize as a beginner’s electronics book for kids. All of the projects in the book utilizes batteries (and solar power for one project) and conductive thread. There is no soldering involved, so the projects are easy and safe for kids to make themselves. All of the materials are fairly easy to find, and the projects get successively more difficult as you go through the book. For my kids, they enjoyed learning more about sensors, transistors, timers, voltage, resistance – there’s a lot of information packed in this book, and all of the projects are instructed very well with plenty of pictures to follow along with. The final project in the book does require a “specialty item” – the Makey Makey – An Invention Kit for Everyone – which is a bit more expensive than the other materials needed for projects in this book.Overall, the kids were really interested in this book, and the projects are within reach for parents like me who are crafty, but lack the tech background. This book would be a great gift to get for families who would like to learn more about tech and build stuff together.

    Great Hands-on Learning
If you want to understand conductive sewing and it’s potential this book is for you! While it would have been nice to have YouTube videos in addition to the handwritten explanations and illustrations about seeing details, the projects start simple and end with coding. It is a wonderful learning arch and I recommend going through every project – you will also be having a ton of fun!
