What I Wanted
I bought this because my battery-powered thermometer turned out to be dead the last time I tried to use it. Either the battery died on its own or a failed to turn it off before putting it away the time before. Since it uses a hearing-aid battery that took three weeks to appear in the local store last time a new battery was needed, I decided to go retro.I have not actually used this so cannot speak to how accurate it is. Frankly, consistency is more important to me anyway. But I can say this:1. I have no reason to believe this is not a new unit, properly assembled and well-packed.2. I did have problems shaking the temp down. I put it in the refrigerator (/not/ the freezer!) for a while. It dropped some but, more usefully, it then responded to being shaken by actually moving the mercury down the tube. Whether this is only needed the first time or will always be needed is unknown.So I am happy with my purchase.

I’m giving it 1 star for effort and the fact that it arrived quickly.
This product was inoperable and likely the result of poor quality control. The issue was there was no temperature reading which was likely due to the indicator (mercury) not being able to expand into the tube. To watch the response to temperature I heated a small amount of water and put the thermometer in it. The bulb immediately broke due to the expansion of the mercury. I suspect the problem was that the mercury bulb was sealed during the manufacturing process and had no place to go during expansion. So not only do I not have a thermometer, I had to deal with the disposal of the mercury. Cannot recommend this product.

Whether you put this in your mouth or under your armpit I feel this has got to be better than any of those digital thermometer. I wish I had looked for one sooner because I bought severl of the others and never had any luck. Therefore while these tend to sit around the house if you keep it in the medicine cabinet at least you know that its in a safe place or quite honestly you know your going to get a reading within a couple minutes which will be reliable and accurate. You just have to shake before each use so as to get the proper tools. Something tells me my grandmothers knew the coming of age with computers and such are only as good as the people that use them and so so correctly. You need to disinfect after each use but because it is. Glass I don’t like to handle with my shaky finger. I am very happy with this item and will get another when or if it needs replacing.

Non-Functional and Hard to Read
This thermometer didn’t work from the moment I received it. The numbers on the display are also too small, making it hard to read. I tried several tests just to be sure, but it still didn’t work at all. Since it was so cheap, I didn’t bother returning it, but I would definitely recommend buying a different thermometer.

Fine. Conventional mercury thermometer. Disinfected it. Popped it under the tongue for five minutes. Indicated 36.6*C/97.9*F…about what I expected. Contains poisonous MERCURY inside. If you drop it, you will have hazardous waste incident. Bad news. Be careful! Don’t use with kids or any other incompetent or careless individuals!

Celsius only and doesn’t stay at the temperature it’s measuring.
If I could give it zero stars, I would. Horrible product. It only shows CELSIUS temperature numbers but you can’t read ANY temperature at all. As soon as the thermometer is removed from your mouth, the mercury, or whatever is inside it, drops back down so fast that it’s completely impossible to even see where what the temp was when pulled out of your mouth. Totally worthless unless you are taking the temperature of a clear glass of water. The mercury literally drops back down to the bottom after removal in about 1-2 seconds.

The thermometer works as it should.My issue is that I ordered the “C” and not the “F”. And the reason for this mistake it that I only looked at the photos which showed “F” and “C” in the same photo so I thought that was what I was getting. I ordered using my phone and the 3 different categories were further down in the page. I was sick and needed something quick. Product did arrive quick and as ordered. But I couldn’t read my temperature but could see it was above the box which indicates normal, yes I had a high fever. Amazon would not replace the product so now I’m stuck with it.

I much prefer oral glass thermometers.Reading them can be a bit tricky at first but once you get the knack it’s pretty simple. I find them to be very accurate.Yes they can break, but word to the wise- they should only be used by folks who can understand instructions about being careful during use. They are not easy to find; so glad to find it on Amazon. I haven’t liked digital or battery powered ones: the batteries create unnecessary hurdles to unfettered use and accuracy.
