    Excellent book!
This was such a great book! The strength Elle and her whole family show throughout this journey is truly inspiring. Elle was very young when she was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes and her journey has not been an easy one. I could relate to the mama bear coming out in her mom as she had to continually fight and advocate for her daughter through the years. She had to fight with insurance companies, doctors, hospitals etc… but she never gave up! I too had medically fragile children and so I know how hard it is to not only be fighting for your child’s life but on top of that you have to fight to get them the care and supplies they need. It’s exhausting!!This whole family and extended family was just amazing! Often times when a crisis hits a family, especially a child’s illness, the family tends to fall apart. This family though just became stronger and closer.I learned so much reading this book, much more than I ever imagined I would when I first started it. I had heard of dogs who could alert when someone was going to have a seizure but I had never heard of dogs who could alert to changes in blood sugar…with it either being too high or too low. I especially enjoyed hearing about the training that the dogs receive.Elle’s dog Coach is an amazing dog who was specially trained to alert to the changes in her blood sugar…often before she or her parents even knew her blood sugars were in the danger zone. The bond between Elle and Coach was simply amazing! Coach made such a difference in not only Elle’s life but also ultimately in the life of the whole family. This is a book you will not regret reading. This is a quote from the book that truly struck a chord with me and I think it is so very true!”The fact is, sometimes our most difficult struggles in life lead us to the most amazing discoveries.”

    Beautiful story beautifully told
Well-written and riveting. Elle and Coach’s story is deeply moving, but this is more than a story about a young girl and her dog- it’s a story about a family coming to terms with a difficult diagnosis, a tribute from a mother to her daughter’s strength, and a testimony to the determination of a mother and father to help their child not just survive but thrive. My nephew has type 1 diabetes, and I thought I was fairly well-informed about what he, my sister and her family experience, but I still learned a lot from reading this book. I’m so sorry her daughter has this difficult disease but as an Aunt, I am grateful that we have Stephany Shaheen’s powerful voice advocating for changes in policy and better treatment. This is a must-read for any parent of a child who has a chronic illness, but it’s also a compelling, well-told story of family love and the bond between humans and dogs.

Elle & Coach is simply superb!
Elle & Coach is simply superb. Its emotional, educational and a highly recommended read for all. Many books redefine the past, this book will redefine the future and ease the path of those that follow or are taking their journey with diabetes, whether directly or indirectly. The braveness in Elle, the heroic never ending support of her parents or the unexplainable magic that Coach brings, I felt it all. The author gets it right and shares with you the emotional, educational, and challenging rollercoaster of the family’s life change. It’s a reminder that the path you plan to take in life, could easily be redirected in a moments notice. Are you ready? Coach is. I challenge anyone, even the tough readers to get through it without sneaking a tissue. If you’re a dog lover, child lover, in medicine, in education, reaching for motiving read, or just want a good book to read, this book is for you.

and we all love him in the end
Whether or not you are familiar with the situation at the center of this book, it is a riveting read. The author is the mother of a daughter, Elle, with Type 1 diabetes. The story of the family’s life is filled with humor and hope. As a mother of 4 kids, I could really relate to the “mom guilt” that Stefany expressed because there never is enough time for each child. The author quickly draws the reader into the universal struggles of raising families in a country where the medical system often seems broken, and help can be hard to find.Coach the dog is a central character, and we all love him in the end. That this family found help, hope and a best friend with Coach is heart-warming and astonishing. You know that Coach will continue to be important as this family works toward solutions, not just for their own family, but for all who face similar problems.

    A MUST READ- BUY 2
Our pre-ordered books arrived last Friday, and I am so glad I ordered 2! Otherwise, Coachie( my husband/the human) and I would have been fighting over who was going to read it first! We started to read them immediately and could not put them down. Both of us had many emotional moments throughout the book. It is so very heartfelt and authentic. Anyone who has a family member or a friend with Type I Diabetes would find the book helpful, especially to know that they are not alone in all their daily challenges. The book is a source of strength and hope for others. It is an easy read, and well -written. Teenagers and adults can identify with the book. And, dog lovers will have warm hearts for Coach( the dog). I am particularly impressed with the advocacy that the entire family has done to educate others about the disease, and in turn help everyone in the future. It definitely is a book of hope. A+/5 stars. Ellen Garneau

The author sums up the whole bag of mixed emotions that come with a diabetes diagnosis and the turmoil that you go through as a parent not only in the beginning but every day all day and night too.Tear jerking and thought-provoking but humorous too.

A heart-warming story about a life threatening health obstacle and how Elle and her parents dealt with it. Also, very educational about the use of animals (dogs in this case) to assist human functioning. Also gives an aspect of humanness to prisoners who help train dogs to help others who have needs.
