HERE’S A HEALTH TO THE BARLEY MOW
A century of folks customs and historical rural video games

From the ‘attractive, savage’ Cornish Might Day rites of Alan Lomax’s Oss Oss Wee Oss to Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane’s footage of ferociously fought conventional soccer; from youngsters’s video games in London’s bombed East Finish to intricate sword and step dances, this assortment of poetic documentaries, lengthy un-seen tv reviews and uncommon silent movie footage reveals simply how highly effective and enduring the folks traditions of Nice Britain have at all times been.
This double-disc set of newly remastered movies is accompanied by an illustrated 58-page booklet together with detailed notes and essays by folks historians. The silent movies function modern fiddle and melodeon accompaniments by modern folks musicians.

    Incredible Collection!
This is a fantastic collection of short films recording traditional performance from the British Isles. There is much here to understand more deeply and many of these films show different aspects of the same traditions. Theres even a film that was made with the involvement of Alan Lomax.

An excellent collection of films. Though a brief title at the start of each would have helped rather than having to refer to the booklet every time. Plus we found the fiddle playing that the BFI have added to the silent films very grating and intrusive after a while. But those minor drawbacks apart we found this collection lovely record of our folk heritage.Someone has complained about the inclusion of a “spoof” custom, from the 1960s, in the collection. Well I would say that many of the customs and traditions that are now subject to po-faced reverence probably did start out as people just having a bit of a laugh. So perhaps that particular ‘spoof’ may well end up being studied by scholars in a few hundred years time. Who will no doubt very seriously extrapolate all kinds of ‘meanings’ from it that it never had.Anyway, if you’re at all interested in our real heritage; of ordinary people enjoying themselves, celebrating nature and life, then this collection is a must.

Though they might be seen as ‘quaint’ these films from the third quarter of the Twentieth Century are a valuable and enjoyable insight into the traditional customs of the time. Many of them have a long history and many are still carried out today.

A great selection of very strange things. The bloke in the Guardian was right when he said it made you feel that wherever you were in the UK, the Whicker Man was just around the corner… The older stuff is the best.

thank goodness some people made the effort to preserve these customs. the ‘ethnic’ ones were the best, EFDSS was more ‘refined’ but still enjoyable. really cheered us up on a cold winter’s night. how universal is the human spirit as there are so many similar dance steps and styles costumes etc all over the world.

Some very rare recordings on these DVDs, very English and really eccentric – highly recommended.Don’t forget Boxing Day at Ironbridge, Shropshire > Morris dancers from around 0930.
