Hard to Read in Light of Roe v. Wade Being Overturned
Based on a true story, it is hard to believe that women were treated so horribly if they became unwed mothers while nothing happened to the man. After all the terrible things that happened to he, she was an amazing person who ended up living alone in a house after 50 years in a mental institution during a time when patients were treated horribly.I found myself rooting for her and hating Sister Cummings. It is hard for me to fathom how a person could be so mean and cruel to anyone. I would have rated it 5 stars, however, I thought that the part after Nora started getting treated better and the system changed – although the events portrayed were important – seemed to drag on and on.

Based on a true story
Based on a true story. It is 1939, Nora is 17 and pregnant but tries to abort the baby and is sent to an insane asylum as a “moral defective”. Her treatment there is appalling. Her parents never come to see her. 40 years later Dr Janet Robinson comes to the asylum to work. It is a time when mental hospitals are being closed down. Janet, despite her own personal problems, decides to help Nora to return to normal society. Great character development. Heartbreaking story. Great book.

inspiring ,difficult at times, but a totally wonderful read
It took me a while to get through some some of those years at the institution., knowing that it was a true story. The writing was wonderful. The reality was painful. I would definitely recommend this book

Emotional read
I related to the story as a retired registered nurse and thought back to the days I remember caring for the patient that received electric or insulin shock. I am so thankful that is no longer a routine procedure.j

I started this book a few years ago and put it down because I was going through a ruff spot. It brought too much sadness. I recently picked it up again and finished it. Amazing story. At this time in my life it brought me a feeling of triumph and joy to see such healing. Nora is an example of what could be with caring support. I’m sure there are Nora’s out there that can relate to this heartfelt saga. You’ll cry, laugh and be proud all at the same time.

This book was excellent, it is a heartbreaking story about a young girl that gets pregnant and a family trapped by antiquated laws of the government and the church. Extremely well written. You live in the book and feel you know the characters intimately.Best book I’ve read in a long time and never I’ve cried as many tears. It’s a must read!!

This is an incredibly sad book. I had to keep reading it just hoping things would get better, and eventually they did, in the end. The events were so hard to believe that I had to do my own research on the internet to verify that pregnant unwed mothear were really locked up in mental institutions in the U.K. in the 1940’s. Yes they were, under the policies of Winston Churchill! Generally these were poor women who came into the system through the workhouses. One would think that a well off, “loving” family would find a way around this such as keeping the pregnancy hidden and arranging a private adoption. However there is a doozy of a plot twist near the end of the book that makes the parents horrifying behaviour more plausible (without blaming the victim at all). It’s a well written book and worth knowing the truth about an aspect of the history of women’s rights that has been swept under the rug, as nobody’s life should ever be.

What a story and what a life Nora lived. I wish she could have lived longer than her 70 or so years so she could experience more of life’s good things.Thank you to the author for sharing such a well written and respectful account of Noras’ life.
