Ideal soil thermometer
The proper soil temperature is critical to robust seed germination. This thermometer has proved to be the ideal instrument to quickly check the soil temp in my garden. It registers quickly. The dial is big and easy to read. It comes with a case that clips to my shirt pocket. The probe is just long enough to measure the most critical part of the soil — the top 4-6 inches. I’ve only had it a few weeks, but I’ve used it a lot. It seems to be durable. Using it should help me to plant everything at the ideal time. I’m very happy with my purchase.

It is a good product
It is a good product. I use it to check the soil temperature. In hunt morel mushrooms In the spring. They start popping out of the ground when the soul temps are 70s daytime and around 50 at night. It works great.

Accurate and simple to use. Able to calibrate it.
This thermometer has been quite helpful in determining the temperature of soils for my plants. It’s nice to keep track of germinating seedlings as well as established plants. It gives fairly quick readings (less than 30 seconds) and has seemed to be pretty accurate. This is a must if you want to check on your soil temps outside. I haven’t had any issues with moisture getting into the needle area, but I also am pretty careful with it and don’t get it terribly wet. A very nice feature of this item is its adjustment nut. If needed, you can calibrate the thermometer against a known temperature to ensure its accuracy. I know another reviewer complained about the adjustment nut being too loose, but I haven’t had any issue with that whatsoever. I would imagine you could just tighten it up if it became a problem anyway. It also works well for reading ambient temperature even when you don’t have it sticked in anything.

Wouldn’t work for me.
It looked like just what I needed – I wanted to take a daily soil temperature starting in the Spring, and share that with my gardening friends. When I first took it out of the package, the thermometer head would twirl around, I didn’t think it should do that but wasn’t sure. But when I stuck it in the ground, left it for a couple of minutes, took it out – no change in temperature. Tried several times with no luck. Maybe I just got a flawed one and most are ok, I don’t know.

The earth
Never, but never, have I imagined a soil thermometer would be something I would purchase. In no sense of the word “gardening” can I qualify. Flowers I buy either on impulse or because someone suggested them. My “gardening” is dig a hole, drop in a bulb or seed, cover it, water it. From then on it’s strictly up to the plant. I do not fertilize, monitor or in any way bother it again. It either grows or it does not. Surely not a gardening system to recommend to anyone, but for me it works. However, I DO read and carefully follow the planting instructions. So when I recently bought some Dahlia bulbs and the instructions said plant when the soild reaches a temperature of degrees, my first thought was, “Now, how in the world am I supposed to know that?” My friend at the local nursery, after chuckling at my ignorance of the earth’s temperature, loaned me a soil thermometer. It looked to me like an ordinary meat thermometer. But it worked. Decided I’d like my very own, and this one is much better than his. It is much longer, which is useful if I’m wondering what the soil temperature is halfway to the center of our planet. Easy to read dial, easy to store. Now I’m a bit more interested in a plant’s health. Can even imagine approaching one with my new soil thermometer, kneeling down next to it and asking it to say “Ahhh”.

Didn’t work for me. Can’t calibrate it, asked twice. Accu-Rite made in China. Return allowed only if unused. Reviews on this product have both good and bad ratings, so it seems some work and some don’t. Sold as Chaney Soil Thermometer. In my case, I expected it to work, used it, so return policy says no. In any event return postage would have been more cost and bother.
